Today is our last day in Asia. As I write this, it is about 10 pm and we are scheduled to leave in 5 hours. Today we went on another survey trip to yet another town. It was a very interesting place, next to the site of the ruins of an ancient fortress which has been filled with earth over the years, so that it is now basically a huge mound. This shepherd was watching his flock as they grazed in the basin created in the center of the fortress.
It was also Victory Day, a celebration of the victory over fascism in the Great Patriotic War (which is known to the non-Soviet world as WWII). These schoolchildren were stationed all over the city in front of monuments.
Although the Central Asian countries were given their independence 16 years ago, many still look back to the good old days of communism. This sign celebrates Victory Day with the hammer and sickle.
Next time you hear from us, we will be in Hungary.
